At the FFN Congress in Melbourne on Oct 21, Dave Marsh, an orthopaedic surgeon from the UK, the ‘Father of the FFN’, was presented with the 2022 FFN Lifetime Achievement Award.
In 2010 Dave saw the care gap for patients who had sustained a fragility fracture around the globe. Through his extensive network he connected with key leaders and activists from around the globe to create the FFN with a vision of a world where anybody who sustains a fragility fracture achieves the optimal recovery of independent function and quality of life, with no further fractures.
Dave has been a consistent driving force in the journey towards achieving this vision. He led the organization through its establishment in a 3-year term as president from 2011 – 2014. Since this time he has continued to lead the organization as General Secretary and in 2018 he was instrumental in supporting the development of the Call to Action which promoted the 4 pillars of Acute care management, Rehabilitation, Secondary Prevention and Policy.
Over the last few years Dave created and led the Regionalization Committee which has been actively working with countries in Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and Latin America to develop National FFNs. There are currently 26 National FFNs all of whom are developing strategies and actively working to improve the care for fragility fracture patients in their countries.
Dave Marsh has been a visionary and will be missed by the activists of the FFN, who will strive to carry out his vision. We all wish him well in his retirement, but will appreciate his continued support on the FFN board.
